Willemijn Theisens

During Spring Gather Together

The work of Willemijn Theisens (1982) is a blend of activism and contemplation. At times, it is harsh and painful; at others, quiet and fragile. By working with materials such as menstrual blood, pearls, cow’s milk, bones, silver, and embroidery, the work speaks directly from the substance of reality. It revolves around femininity, vulnerability, beauty, and sorrow, while also centering on the ongoing powerlessness in the face of animal and human suffering.

DAYS is a series of linocut prints in an edition of 470. This number represents the days that have passed since October 7, 2023, until the ceasefire earlier this year. It is symbolic because the immense suffering and destruction that preceded it still continue. The prints depict children's hands forming a peace sign—a simple, universal gesture that speaks without explanation. In the paper, there are sometimes holes, missing ink, traces of what is no longer there. The hands exist both as a presence and an absence. They are countless, yet each one is unique.

"Besides donating and demonstrating, I wanted to do more... to transform my frustration over the enormous injustice unfolding before our eyes into something positive. Art Collective for Peace crossed my path, and I immediately recognized it as an answer."

The works have been donated to Art Collective For Peace, and the proceeds go to Hope Foundation, an organization dedicated to the development of children in conflict zones, with a focus on children with trauma and disabilities. Hope uses art and play to achieve this.

The works are for sale. The full proceeds go to charity.
