Screen printing is a versatile technique with which graphic work can be easily reproduced. The advantage of screen printing compared to other techniques is that it can be widely used for various applications. It is relatively easy to print in editions and on various materials and surfaces such as textiles, wood, ceramics, glass and metal. It offers many possibilities. That is the power of screen printing, a technique that is embraced and used by many artists and designers.

Plaatsmaken offers two different workshops to further acquaint yourself with the technique. There is an introductory workshop for beginners and an workshop for people who want to refresh their screen printing knowledge.

Introductory screen printing workshop
This workshop is suitable for beginners without any screen printing experience. In one afternoon you will become acquainted with the basics of screen printing; the technique and the printing process. Together with other students you will start creating a joint image. All aspects of the printing process will be discussed, such as preparing a screen printing frame, the inks and setting up your screen printing table. You will also learn how to use the tools and materials that come with it.

Screen Printing Workshop: Reviving Forgotten Skills
Have you ever screen printed, but it's been a while? Plaatsmaken offers a workshop to refresh your screen printing knowledge. In the workshop you will start printing your own image or design. All steps are discussed to be able to screen print independently. Discover how you can translate your design into a screen print on paper. Experience the added value of screen printing for you as a maker. Get ideas that you can then apply in your own practice and projects.

Introductory workshop
Number of participants: 4 people
Duration: 1 afternoon 12:00 - 17:00
Price: € 105,- p.p. incl. materials and VAT

Reviving Forgotten Skills

The workshops are given by screen printer Simon Groot Kormelink.

Do you want to sing up or do you want to know more about the workshops? Contact us via info@plaatsmaken.nl or get in contact with our screen printer Simon. He is present on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

If new workshop dates are available, they will be shown at the top of the page.

Cyanotype (blueprint) was invented in 1842 by the English astronomer and photographer John Herschel. This photographic technique was then the only relatively simple and cheap way to make contact prints. By using two iron salts and exposing them to strong sunlight, a cyan blue colour is created. When the chemical agents are washed away with water, a stable blue colour remains, with the unexposed parts remaining white.

The workshop in this special technique is given by Aafke Bennema. You will learn the process step by step: from making the paper light-sensitive, positioning the subject to be exposed, to the exposure and fixation. You will learn the possibilities and develop a feeling for the technique.

We work with black and white A-4 negatives (for photo prints) and various objects (photograms). You can make the negatives yourself in advance by printing a negative image on a transparent sheet.

Duration: 9.30 - 13.30

Participants: 4 people

Costs: € 110,- p.p. incl. materials and VAT

If new workshop dates are available, they will be displayed at the top of the page.

Bookbinding for beginners
During a targeted workshop, you will learn how to make your own books, complete with cover. You will learn to bind sections with blank paper, and later glue them together to finally create a cover. Once you have mastered this basic technique, you will make your own book from now on.

Advanced bookbinding
Have you already attended a beginners' workshop at Plaatsmaken, or gained experience elsewhere? Then the follow-up workshop for advanced bookbinders might be something for you. This workshop covers more complex techniques.

Both workshops are given by art teacher Imke Adriaansen.

Duration: 1 afternoon
Participants: 4 to 6 people
Costs: € 105,- p.p. incl. materials and VAT

If new workshop dates are available, they will be displayed at the top of the page.

The darkroom is the basis for many special experiments. First of all, the latent image, which has been captured on photographic film with an analogue camera, is made visible here. The negative material is processed into prints on photographic paper. In addition to the standard darkroom techniques, many experiments are possible, which are exposed. If there is interest, follow-up workshops can be organised. The workshop takes place in the morning, after which further experimentation and development can be carried out in the darkroom in the afternoon (if desired).

Teacher Carel Lanters studied at the Academy of Arts in Enschede (AKI, 1976-1981). He was taught by Joop Hardy (art history and art appreciation), Alphons Freijmuth, Reinier Lucassen, Jan Roeland, Ad Gerritsen and Sigurdur Gudmundsson.

Duration: 1 morning
Participants: 3 people
Costs: € 100.00 (incl. materials and 21% VAT)

If new workshop dates are available, they will be displayed at the top of the page.

Toyobo plates are aluminium plates with a light-sensitive polymer layer. In a simple and non-toxic way, you will learn to place photographic images that you have brought with you, printed on sheets or copied on the plate, which you can print as an etching after exposing, developing and fixing. You can also place images and drawings on the plate in this way as photographic linoleum cuts and use them as a relief printing plate. Both aspects will be discussed during the workshop.

This technique has many possibilities, if only because you can first edit and adjust the photo or image yourself in Photoshop.

The workshop is given by Mirka Farabegoli and you will learn all the steps; from exposing to inking and printing as an etching or relief printing.

Duration: 1 day
Participants: 4-6 people
Costs: € 205,- p.p. incl. materials and VAT.

If new workshop dates are available, they will be displayed at the top of the page.

The pinhole technique is as old as it is beautiful and mysterious. With a simple method you can take beautiful photos in which the factors of time and intuition play an important role. Exposure times vary from 10 sec. to 30 minutes. This is because you photograph through a small hole instead of a lens. What can you capture in that time and what normally remains invisible becomes visible?

In this workshop you will work with a self-made pinhole camera and print in the darkroom. Students will take photos outside based on a common concept and learn the finer points of pinhole photography, with attention to content aspects. You will work on 120 black and white film (6x6 cm, 6x7 cm) and you will learn to develop and print the film. By gaining insight into the basics of photography, the camera obscura, you will also learn to work differently with your digital camera. In a second step you will learn how to scan and edit the film so that you can print the image.

The workshop is given by Carel Lanters. He studied at the Academy of Arts in Enschede (AKI, 1976-1981).

Morning: make your own pinhole camera based on an old 6x6 cm camera (available). After instructions and the possibilities of working with long exposure times, you will expose a film. After this, you will develop the film.

Afternoon: after a few prints on photo paper in the darkroom, you will go digital: scan, edit and print the film. So from super analogue to digital.

Duration: 1 day
Participants: 4 people
Costs: € 180,- p.p. (incl. materials and VAT)

If new workshop dates are available, they will be displayed at the top of the page.

Monoprint is an accessible printing technique where you print a print only once, creating unique prints. During this workshop, we will work with monoprint and printing techniques with recycled materials. You will learn playful methods to create original printed work. We will start with a few basic techniques on a small format and you will work towards a poster-size design.

We will provide the basic materials for printing (ink and paper). You will receive extensive instructions in advance about which recycled materials you can take with you.

Duration: 9:30 - 16:30
Participants: 6-8 people
Costs: € 110,- p.p. (incl. materials and VAT)
