The Arnhems Stadsatelier project organizes work periods that provide creators with the space to conduct artistic research at various locations throughout Arnhem and to share their findings with the city’s residents. One of the artists selected for these short-term residencies at Plaatsmaken is Isaac van den Aker.
Isaac graduated in 2025 (Design Art Technology, ArtEZ). His practice explores sound, video, code, and installations, focusing on the hidden potential of everyday technological objects by detaching them from their original intended use—asking, "What happens when you strip away their function?" In doing so, Isaac abstracts and distorts the objects he works with.
Driven by this interest in technology and its latent possibilities, Isaac began his research in our screen-printing studio. His work reflects on the "global dream" of perfect, efficient, and streamlined technology. By assembling—arguably superfluous—elements such as printed cable ties or swarms of screen-printed flies, he makes the gap between technological promise and the reality of waste tangible. The result is a critical perspective on our technological future, one centered on improvisation and discarded materials. Isaac transforms simple substances like plastic and wood into interactive objects that engage in a dialogue with the viewer.
Isaac has now concluded his residency at Plaatsmaken, and we are currently busy preparing his presentation. It will be on view—day and night—starting Friday, October 30, at 171project.space.
